Why choose a sofa with an iron frame?

The quality of a sofa, whether fixed or modular, depends on the characteristics of its individual components.
These include the inner structure, or frame; the fact that this is not visible often means it is not given full importance.

However, it is actually an essential component. For comparison, the frame of a sofa is like the skeleton of a human body; in other words, it is the load-bearing element which gives the sofa its shape, and it includes the feet, armrests, backrest and seat. For this reason it must be robust, solid and hardwearing, but simultaneously flexible, so that the sofa is comfortable.

The advantages of a sofa with an iron frame

The frame of a sofa may be made of wood, metal or chipboard.
Although in the past wooden frames were preferred, today furniture manufacturers are increasingly opting for frames made of iron, because:

• it is a tough and durable material
• it is robust and can sustain considerable weight
• it is not affected by changes in temperature
• it is lightweight and flexible
• the cost is moderate

Iron frames are preferable, for example, for reclining modular sofas, while wood is generally used for larger sofas. Chipboard frames, however, may be the most economical but are the least suitable in terms of quality, because this is the least robust and durable material, and tends to break easily and absorb more moisture.
